Seer Sybill Trelawney, while interviewing for the post of Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1980, had gone into a trance and predicted that a baby boy born at the end of July to parents who had three times defied Lord Voldemort would possess the power to defeat him. Learning of the prophecy, the Dark Lord had interpreted it to mean Harry Potter, though it could've also have applied to Neville Longbottom.
A record of the prophecy (as with all prophecies) had been kept in the Department of Mysteries, in the form of an orb, until a battle had broken out for said prophecy in 1996. The prophecy itself goes:
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...."
